Sermon Transcript by Rev. Ernest O'Neill
I asked God to give me something that would be right for someone here this morning and so it's not along the lines of the studies in Romans, which we'll resume next Sunday. But it is something that he gave me. It's Isaiah, loved ones, if you will look at it in 51:1.
Isaiah 51:1, "Hearken to me, you who pursue deliverance, you who seek the Lord; look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were digged." So this is for somebody today. "Hearken to me, you who pursue deliverance, you who seek the Lord, look to the rock from which you were hewn and to the quarry from which you were digged."
A lot of us have troubles with our own bad tempers. We have troubles with our psychological life and we're having troubles with our emotions. A lot of us here are having difficulties in our own personal lives that we cannot overcome. A lot of us have difficulties in our business lives that we can't sort out. Many of us are trying to sort these out by going to all kinds of books. The books give some light but they don't deliver you. They don't bring deliverance.
Many of us go to counselors and they are good counselors. Some are psychologists and some are pastors. Many of us go to Bible study groups and all these things help us. Probably all of us would agree we've received some help from all these things. But there is only one place to go, if you want complete deliverance. That is, you look "to the rock from which you were hewn and to the quarry from which you were digged."
Now, what rock were you hewn from and what rock was I hewn from? It's not obvious at first sight but it is found in John 1:4 and it requires that you go a little behind the verse and the translation to find it.
John 1:4, "In him was life, and the life was the light of man." But you see those four words, "In him was life", then you see the little footnote "a" to the right hand side of life like an index. Look down at the bottom of the page; you see that footnote "a". They give you the rest of the verse, "was not anything made." Then they deal with that verse 4 and the Greek actually reads, "That which has been made was life in Him." "That" was life in Jesus. Your hands were life in Jesus. Your eyes were life in Jesus. No doctor can really explain why your heart beats. It beats because it was and is life in Jesus at this present time. All that you are at this moment, you are because you came as life from Jesus.
You were life in Jesus before the world was made. You were part of Jesus. The spark that enables you to breathe today is because of His life. All that has been made was life in Jesus. You came from Jesus, loved ones. You came from God's Son Jesus. That's where you came from. That's the kind of person you are, that's the only way you work right. You were life in Jesus, and you are life in Jesus at this present time.
The thing has gone wrong because you've forgotten that. You have started to live as if you were your own self and as if you could do just what you wanted. You live as if it was up to you to look at this great oyster here and get your jewel out of it. That's not why you are here at all. You're put here because Jesus wants to do things through you -- the kinds of things that He did in His own physical body and you'll only be happy when you're doing that. You'll only be happy when you're doing the kind of thing that He did -- when you're living for His Father and not for yourself.
What we all do is we forget that. We decide, "No, we're going to live for ourselves in this world and we're going to get what we want." That's why we become perverted and all twisted up inside. We're always looking out for the main chance. We have always an eye to the main chance to try to see what little bit more money we can get or what little bit more happiness we can get. Even when we marry, we're all the time looking to get the right position in regard to the other person so that we come out with what we need.
Jesus Himself lives "self forgetfully." He just lives to help other people, to love other people, to do His Father's will. Loved ones that's the way you were made; you were made to do that. What do you need to get deliverance from your personal problems? You need to go back to the rock from which you were hewn. You need to go back to Jesus. You need to go back to "the quarry from which you were digged." All of us can help you in some way but we can't deliver you. Only the person from whom you were made can deliver you. You have to go back to the rock from which you are hewn. You have to go back to Jesus.
Even the things we talk about in regard to prayer are good things. You remember what we shared about from Cho and Wigglesworth and the others? They're good things but finally there is only one person you need and that is Jesus. You need to seek Him on your knees in prayer and say, "Lord Jesus, You are the rock from which I was hewn. I need to get through to You Lord, I need to know You, I need to have you in my heart." You need to do that loved ones. You need to yearn for Him.
If you say to me, "Oh tell me how to do it", you know right well that's silliness. How could I tell you how to love your mom? How could I tell you how to love your dearest friend? How could I tell you how to love your wife? You know fine well how you do it. You put your arms around them and you hug them to yourself with all your desire. If you say to me, "yes, but I can't see him", then give up the arms and just feel towards Him in your heart the way you feel towards your dearest friend or towards your wife or your mom. You yearn them into your heart with strong desire and hunger and you stay before them doing that for an hour if need be, but you get back to the rock from which you were hewn.
That's what you need to do in your own life. There's somebody here today who has been trying, like the woman in the Bible who had an issue of blood. You've spent your money for 12 years on all kinds of doctors and you're no better. You've tried everything and done all kinds of things. You've gone to all kinds of churches and all kinds of pastors and all kinds of psychologists. You're just a wee bit better but still there is the problem.
Go back to the rock from which you are hewn. Go to Jesus, just go to Him and tell Him you're in trouble and you've lost your way. You know that you were life in Him at one time and you want to be life in Him again. "Lord Jesus, will you come in and somehow make yourself real to me and somehow lift me out of this?" He is not looking for somebody to do it right. He doesn't care if you do it right or not. He is like your mom. She helps you whether you call to her in the right tone of voice or not, whether you use the right words or not, she hugs you to herself and so with Jesus. You don't need a whole lot of difficult instructions. You need to just go back to the rock from which you were hewn.
Loved ones, Jesus is waiting for you to do that and there is some loved one here this morning that needs to do that. You need to give up the running around to all the counselors and all the books and go for Jesus with all your heart. Hug Him into you by your strong desire. He'll come. If you say to me, "Well, I have tried it for an hour." Well, maybe you have to try for two hours.
He is the king of the universe. He is the one from whom you were made and from whom you came. Your fingers were life in Him, your face was life in Him, your heart and all the bits of you that are going wrong, they were life in Him. You have to go back to the Maker. You have to go back "to the rock from which you were hewn and the quarry from which you were digged." I'd encourage you to go back this morning, come back to Him this morning and go to Him like a simple little child and say, "Lord, I need deliverance here and You alone can give it to me."
Let us pray.
Dear Lord, we come to you because there's nowhere else to go. You have not only the words of eternal life, but Lord, You have that life. Oh Jesus, we come to you this morning "to the rock from which we were hewn, to the quarry from which we were digged." We come back to you. We ask You Lord to come in and deliver us now, deliver us now Lord. Amen.
